Help with electricity bills
Making ends meet isn’t always easy, but there are services and programs that can help you reduce your living costs or pay for essential services.
Bill relief programs
Most Tasmanian electricity customers are supplied by a retailer, such as Aurora Energy, 1st Energy, Momentum, CovaU or Energy Locals.
There are three programs providing bill relief for these customers:
- National Energy Bill Relief – this is a two-year partnership between the Australian and State Governments that provides a $250 payment for eligible concession customers. That program also ran in 2023-24, and access for that year has now closed. There is one payment left available under this program.
- Supercharged Renewable Energy Dividend – this is a once-off payment of $250 from the Tasmanian Government. This is open to any residential connection on an embedded network, there are no concession requirements.
- Energy Bill Relief Extension 2024-25 – this is a once-off payment of $300 from the Australian Government. This is open to any residential connection on an embedded network, there are no concession requirements.
Customers served by retailers do not need to apply to receive these rebates. The payments are all managed directly by retailers. If you have questions about your rebate, please contact your electricity retailer.
If your principal place of residence is in a caravan park, retirement village or other situations where a landlord bills you for your electricity usage and that usage is metered, then you are considered to be living on an embedded network.
There are three programs active in 2024-25 for permanent residential connections on embedded networks, details are here.
Customers that do not receive an individually metered electricity supply (eg. a person renting a caravan sharing residential land and taking electricity from another connection) do not meet the definition of an embedded network and there are no bill relief programs available.
The Energy Saver Loan scheme provides 0% interest loans of up to $10,000 for eligible applicants to invest in energy efficient products to help lower their electricity bills.
Private residential customers, small business customers, community organisations, and landlords of residential rental properties are able to access the Scheme. To date the scheme has received over 3,000 applications and proudly supports local Tasmanian installers.
Further details of the eligibility requirements and the Scheme guidelines can be found on the Energy Saver Loan Scheme page.
You can learn more about how to apply for the Scheme at the Brighte website, or by calling Brighte on 1300 274 448.
