Renewables, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania

Hydrogen Community Impact and Education

The Tasmanian Government continues to contribute to the development of the National Hydrogen Strategy, and our commitment is to work with industry, other governments, and the community to develop a renewable hydrogen industry that provides ongoing benefits for Tasmanians. A specific area of focus is the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone (BBAMZ) due to having all the requirements to support Tasmania's Green Hydrogen Hub vision. An initiative of the State Government is to develop this community engagement strategy which provides an overview of how the Government will engage through the development of Hydrogen in Tasmania.

The purpose of this strategy is to:

  1. Build awareness the community about Green Hydrogen and the role it will play in Tasmania’s renewable energy future.
  2. Develop understanding of the benefits to all of Tasmanians in improving our renewable energy targets, along with education on new future fuel sources.
  3. Maintain support of key stakeholders and proponents for the manufacture of green hydrogen and its derivatives, enable active engagement and develop awareness of how they can participate in the process, including roles and responsibilities in the engagement process.
  4. Demonstrate the State Government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that Tasmania has a significant role to play in reducing carbon emissions across all industries.

The objectives are:

  • To demonstrate that the Government is proactively engaging in best practice communication and engagement and setting a positive benchmark for the process as per the Guidelines.
  • To proactively build community awareness and positive interest for Green Hydrogen Development on an ongoing basis.
  • To ensure proponents, stakeholders and the public in the development communities have access to information about the Tasmanian Green Hydrogen Hub at Bell Bay and its developments.
  • To ensure appropriate channels to engage and provide feedback are available and build people’s capacity to use them.
  • To deepen the understanding of the actual benefits of Green Hydrogen and begin to explore with key stakeholders how these could be delivered over time.
  • To establish relationships and build community confidence for future participatory activities.
  • To begin to identify and understand key community expectations, concerns and desires associated with Green Hydrogen Development.
  • To have an agreed benefit sharing arrangement between the proponents and the local community and government.
